Rimu Street

Ongoing renovation working around a busy family.

Location: Toi Toi, Nelson (New Zealand)
Completed: ongoing
Highlights: Collaborative build, architectural yet economical

This Rimu Street project took a classic 1949 home and gave it a deep modern upgrade while keeping its original charm. We reclaimed all the existing rimu, brought it back to life, and used it throughout the new timber windows and interior joinery — a real nod to the home’s history and street name.

The new exterior walls are wrapped in oiled Lawson Cypress with soft radius corners that give the house a warm, contemporary feel. The Lawson is in contrast with the existing stucco and creates a definitive but complementary junction where old meets new.

We extended the footprint & rebuilt the entire roof structure, added skylights for natural light, and refreshed every room.

Inside, the home features a fully tiled bathroom, polished rimu flooring, fresh carpet, and a clean, modern layout designed for family living. The result is a timeless mix of old and new — a solid 1940s home transformed into something ready for the future.

“A truly unique and demanding project to be very proud of.”
