Broadgreen Glasshouse: Heritage Restoration

A careful heritage restoration, strengthening Broadgreen’s historic glasshouse while preserving its original character.

Location: Stoke, Nelson (New Zealand)
Completed: July, 2026
Highlights:
Heritage restoration, salvaged brickwork, traditional timber joinery.

Set within the grounds of Broadgreen House, this historic glasshouse called for patience, precision and respect for the past. Nelson Builders approached the restoration with a clear purpose: strengthen the structure while retaining the appearance and details that make it special.

The work involved carefully dismantling, labelling and reinstating components, ensuring each returned to its original place. Salvaged bricks were prioritised for reuse, while timber joinery repairs preserved as much original material as possible.

New concrete foundations and concealed steel reinforcement provide lasting structural support. Traditional lime-based mortar and heritage paint systems complement the restoration, with careful planning protecting the surrounding garden and retaining the original roof glazing.

This project reflects the quieter side of craftsmanship: carefully repairing what is already there, resolving structural challenges and helping a valued piece of Nelson’s history endure.

“Every piece had a history, and our job was to give it a future. The real craft was in the details—making the glasshouse stronger while leaving its character intact.”
